SPCA deserves more from the City — DA

Type: Media Statement
Yearly, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Ekurhuleni receives a grant from the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) for the Pound Services. This grant aims to assist the SPCA with the services they render which include treating animals, removing animals, euthanising animals.
However, it is alarming that the ANC-led metro has only recently approved the grant for the 2020/2021 financial year! This is utterly appalling and smacks in the face of poor planning by the ANC and its coalition partners*.
This crucial funding assists the SPCA in managing core responsibilities and handling its limited resources.
In the past year, COVID-19 has had a major impact on everyone, and with this a greater number of animals have also been affected. The number of people that have had to surrender their animals, give them away, beg for food and medical assistance has increased tremendously.
This means the added pressure placed on the critical services the SPCA offers cannot be ignored and the CoE should be doing more to assist this Society.
We, as the DA, request that the Municipality seriously think and re-evaluate the offering to the SPCA and ensure that they pay the grant timeously, so that the SPCA will be able to continue offering their vital services to communities.
As the DA, we will continue to hold the failing ANC and its coalition partners to account. Poor planning cannot be allowed to become the norm at the expense of social responsibility.
Coalition Partners: African Independent Congress (AIC), Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Independent Ratepayers Association of South Africa (IRASA)
