Incorrect Tariffs burdening ratepaying residents

The failing ANC and coalition-led City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has yet again made Ekurhuleni residents pay for their inabilities and failure to correctly implement the new tariffs.

This month, many residents are facing up to two additional charges on their utilities bill. These charges are because the new tariff for Sewage was not loaded onto the finance system, and now the residents are having to back pay the difference between the old rate (up to end June 2021) and the new rate from 1 July 2021.

Residents already braced themselves for the steep increases that came into effect on 1 July 2021 and are now burdened with additional charges.

It is appalling that ratepayers bear the brunt of the ANC’s poor administrative management. In addition, it had taken two months after the budget was approved to have the incorrect household water and sewer tariffs brought back to the council for amendment.

The impact of this error has been hard felt by our communities and residents. This clearly highlights that the ANC and its coalition partners are not serious about service delivery to the communities of Ekurhuleni.

As the DA, we call for corrective measures to be taken against those responsible for this serious error and the MMC needs to account to the communities affected by the ANC’s incompetence. With service delivery at an all-time low and ratepayers frustrated over the misinformation regarding tariff increases, it is time for a capable party to govern Ekurhuleni and restore confidence.
