Release: Immediate

The Democratic Alliance (DA), in Ekurhuleni, is uniting with residents and businesses in Ekurhuleni and taking a stand against the ongoing power outages in the ANC and coalition-led City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) by bringing a motion of no confidence in the failing ANC appointed Executive Mayor, Cllr Mzwandile Masina.

We brought this motion against the Mayor as we strongly believe that he has failed in his mandate to the residents of Ekurhuleni. A mandate of service delivery and clean government. During the ongoing power outages, Cllr Masina, has been uncontactable and missing in action, while his residents and businesses struggle.

The DA and councillors have, on numerous occasions, tried to contact Mayor Masina, or the City Manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi or the HOD for Energy, Mark Willson, regarding the persistent power outages that grip areas of Ekurhuleni after loadshedding, causing system failure, due to lack of maintenance. However, Mayor Masina simply refuses to answer, or take responsibility for his administration’s failure.

Infrastructure across the ANC and the coalition-led city is in a total state of collapse due to years of neglect and the complete lack of maintenance. The City is already struggling to keep the lights on, and with an understaffed Energy Department and non-existent maintenance, things are about to get a lot worse for businesses and residents from 1 July 2021. This, as the ANC and its coalition partners voted to increase the tariffs on electricity by around 14%, while also cutting the electricity maintenance budget by almost R168 million.

It’s this poor governance and mismanagement which has plunged our municipality into darkness.

The public are calling out for action against poor governance. As the DA, we have committed ourselves to protecting the rights of individuals and businesses.

While we await the Speaker of Council, Ald Patricia Kumalo’s decision to call an extra-ordinary Council meeting on whether council will hear our urgent motion, residents around Ekurhuleni are still without electricity, some for over 12 days. As a result, residents are suffering with the loss of food and income, placing a greater burden on already struggling communities.

This is council’s opportunity to put the people first, who have had to endure untold suffering under Masina’s uncaring administration.
